Bar Centrale, Tea Rooms in the main square. The best people watching spot in the town. A great balcony, shaded in summer, and heated in winter allows you to watch the people coming and going about their daily lives. In existence for over 100 years, Luigi Cretarola has run it for 22. There is a menu in Italian and English which lists the fantastic selection including; mlkshakes, beers, wines, Cakes, pre dinner drinks and nibbles, Ice Creams, Pizza slices, Sandwiches, Coffees and cakes. The nibbles that come with say a Campari before dinner are called 'Stuzzicchini' but don't worry you don't have to ask for them - they bring them to your table as part of the service.

If you want to be assured of the most comprehensive selection of Italian delicasies for your picnic or to prepare in your apartment look no further than Alimentari di Nono Francesco. Here and service that is second to none. To find this store from the main arch of Penne, walk along the street lined with shops towards the main square. When you start to go up the hill a little you hit a sharp bend with a music shop on your right. in the tiny square to your left you will see a wooden vertical sign 'Alimentari' inside is the Deli. This Delicatessen has been in the family for 80 years, started by the grandad 'Bavino' the nickname has stuck and been passed throught the generations to the 'grandson' who runs it this day. You are greeted by a smile, a family welcome, and professional service. Bavino says (In Italian of course), "If you come here all will be 'Va Bene'- Okay!"

When you drive from Pescara to Penne the first thing you see as you pass the tree lined park and promenade is the significant architecture of the town, and the large arch gateway of San Francesco. Caffé del Orologio is a bar where you can feel comfortable if you are dressed up or casual, you are guaranteed to enjoy a great atmosphere there, and things really hot up after dinner. The new owners Antonietta and
Enzo intend to extend this welcome starting with breakfast and adding great furnishings and comfortable touches. As you pass through the main arch of Penne, there is a lovely little square. Under a magnificent majolica clock, is the Castiglione Palace, a palace owned by a noble family, you will find Caffé dell Orologio. Not only is it stunning outside, but inside you will find great sitting areas, ncluding all the traditional features you would expect to see in a magnificent Italian palace. Ask to be shown the well!

If you want to be assured formal dining with friendly hospitality look no further than Osteria del leone. It's found in the first little Piazza up from the main square of Penne. Antonio
Catone, the passionate owner and chef, selects the best free range and organic produce from local producers in the region and Italy. There are over 200 quality wines to choose from, including
of course the local Montepulciano d'Abruzzo. When you enter you see that the restaurant has been tastefully presented to make the most of its magnificent exposed terracotta brick arched ceilings. There are three eating areas, which makes it great for romantic dining or celebrating with friends. To start there is always varied delights including hams and cheeses of the region, followed by a wide choice of pastas and main courses of the day. You might even be lucky enough to try local wild boar. They cater for vegetarians, and a gluten free diet.They've won too many awards to list in this small space, but they've got on display a huge cup they've won for offering the 'best plate' in Abruzzo, and this year they have been listed free based on merit in the Italian best restaurant diary which awards winners with a page for a day with their listing. They are closed Monday, and are open for Lunch and dinner. Credit cards accepted.

When you find yourself in Penne past 3pm, when all you want is lunch, make your way to La Vestina bar. Open 6 - 24 hrs everyday except Monday. To find it you head up the main square, in the little square with the lion you turn left, at the end of the road the bar can be found. Take a look at these magnificent cakes that you can purchase, if you get invited to dinner tell them how much you want to spend and they will make you up a big tray of cakes. Also they have a small restaurant out the back on two floors, and a selection of hot plates in the bar, with piazzas, a great big spit roast pig 'porcetta', and a the local speciality which is a type of cold scrambled egg in filo pastry.

A short walk out of the main square will find you at this restaurant.

From the main square, go up to the square with the lion, keep going up and 20 yards on you with find Quanto Basta - which means how much is enough?! The owner Rafaello has been a chef in the region for many years, and we are certainly happy to have him start this eating place in Penne. A year on, many visitors have made sure to have this on their list. A great selection of freshly cooked typical food 3 courses with wine around €22 per person.

bikers bar PENNE (PE)

Bikers Bar is found just outside the Old Town of Penne. It's a little walk or car drive, but it's worth it. As well as a friendly bar where one of the owners Fabio speaks English, you can also eat a very large lunch for under €10 a head including wine and coffee. They offer a hearty pasta or a second course. I really enjoy their spaghetti with clams, the menu varies daily. It's
right next door to the famous Brioni Suit makers where names such as Michael Jackson, Sean Connery and Piers Brosnan visited. After lunch take a promenade with the Italians down the Viale San Francesco.

belvedere PENNE (PE)

This bar was built in 1947 after the old cinema theatre was bombed in WW2. Not is it a great Geletaria - Ice cream parlour, they do teas, coffees, bar drinks and handy snacks all day long. They are open at 6.30 in the morning which is handy for picking up a sandwich before going off into the mountains for walking or skiing. Behind the bar is a great terrace with far reaching views. If you don't want to miss out on a race, you can also use their betting shop for all the races & matches back home.

my friends PENNE (PE)

My Friends Bar is found in a great position right in the main piazza of Penne. Owners Antonio and Elio spent many years working in England and on Cruise ships so they certainly know how to combine the charm of Italy with a service that we welcome. They serve food all day. My favourites are the traditional soups and the great mixed salads. The menu varies daily. The front of the building is particularly of interest as there Roman Columns have been uncovered. From spring through to autumn chairs are outside, and this is the closest restaurant to Il Palazzo Bed and Breakfast, also the home to www.abruzzowalks.com.
